[Image description: a tweet by @JohinaAamer that says, “Shes got her dad, but she may not know i dont have my dad because of hers,” with a photo of President Barack Obama and his daughter Sasha steering a boat.]
For those who don’t know, Johina is the daughter of Shaker Aamer, a Saudi Arabian citizen who was living in Britain at the time of his arrest. The evidence for the arrest (that he participated in the Battle of Tora Bora) in question is based on evidence received from questionable sources through torture procedures. The Bush administration even admitted later that their evidence was weak. He never was officially charged for any wrongdoing and never had a trial. He was detained in Guantánamo Bay Prison in 2001 and was cleared for release TWICE in 2007 and 2009 BUT STILL REMAINS IN GITMO. His mental and physical health have been declining over the years he has spent at GITMO, and he is currently participating in a hunger strike with many other prisoners to protest their wrongful detention. He has lost 40% of his body weight because of this. Government, if there was a time where you could actually get your shit together and do something right, now would be the time.
He says good things on twitter and in some of his songs and is genuinely more vulnerable and supportive of people’s differences than any other young artist I’ve seen in a long time. He also writes super misogynistic lyrics. For me, the reason I’m still reblogging tweets from him is the same reason I have a hard time not posting Azealia Banks(transmisogynist) or Divine(racist, ableist); as members of many, often intersecting, marginalized groups we have so few public figures and so little media that we can relate to, so I often find myself holding on longer than I normally would when someone fucks up. Lil B(misogynist) made me feel a certain way when he cried on camera and told the world that he loves us, the way I felt when Rosanne(transmisogynist) talked about being fat and proud, when Obama(child murderer and warmonger) mentioned gays in his 2008 acceptance speech, when RuPaul(racist apologist, transmisogynist) was the first brown boy I ever saw in a dress. It’s this bending for scraps of respect that keeps me sane sometimes, but I know I will inevitably have to let them go when they give me more pain than love.
Henry has been detained at Broward Transitional Center for nearly 4 months after he was arrested for driving without a license. He has no priors in his record.
He has three U.S. citizen children, one who needs special medical and dietary attention because he has Laron Syndrome.
Laron Syndrome is a genetic disorder that only affects hundreds of people around the world. The treament Henry’s son receives is only available in select locations and completely unavailable in Mexico.
TAKE ACTION - MAKE A CALL:
Call ICE – John Morton @ 202-732-3000 or 202-732-3100
Sample Script: “Hi, I am calling to urge ICE to release Henry Hernandez (A#078-313-268) from Broward Transitional Center. Henry is the father of three U.S. citizen children, including one who suffers from Laron Syndrome. Henry is a low priority case and should be released immediately.”
Washington D.C.: 202-224-3041
Washington D.C.: 202-224-5274
Sample Script: “I am calling to ask the Senator take a position on the case of Henry Hernandez (A# 078-313-268) from Broward Transitional Center. Henry is the victim of racial profiling and has three U.S. citizen children who need him at home. One of them has Laron Syndrome and requires treatment. Why won’t the Senator take a position on this case and issue a letter of support?”
During the recent campaign,President Obama claimed credit for increasing funding to the Pell Grant program, which provides college funds, free from repayment, to millions of students. However, an email sent out Tuesday to some Dallas college students is revealing a detail the President forgot to mention: the time a student can receive a Pell Grant has been cut, by as much as three years. With Pell Grants for the fall semester now dispersed, colleges are informing students of their options, bringing the cuts to light.
The email, sent out by the Dallas County Community College District, informed students of the changes to the Pell Grant program. It revealed that the number of semesters a student could receive a Pell Grant had been cut from 18 semesters down to 12. It is a detail likely unknown to most students; in fact, the cut in grants has gone largely unreported by the media.
The email states that the cut in eligibility was part of an education bill President Obama signed into law in 2011. “On December 23, 2011, President Obama signed into law the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2012 (Public Law 112-74). This new federal law states that the amount of Federal Pell Grant funds a student may receive over his or her LIFETIME will be reduced to the duration of a student’s eligibility from 18 semesters (or its equivalent) to 12 semesters (or its equivalent). This new law applies to ALL Federal Pell Grant eligible students effective with the 2012-2013 award year beginning July 1, 2012. (DCL-GEN-12-01)”
The cut in grant eligibility has serious ramifications for non-traditional students. Part-time students who do not receive a full semester grant may lose out on funds if they do not earn an undergraduate degree within 12 semesters. Adults who go back to school, including retraining for a new career, will also have limited access to grants.
This is fucking bullshit.
